strange wall setup

All my exterior walls are the normal brick rendered outside. However all the stud walls are made from what reminds me of egg box material, like that used in old cheap doors (not hardboard but plasterboard. The thing is the exterior walls are also lined inside with the same materials. Has anyone come across this setup before. BTW it's an old council house.

Paramount partition. Very common up to about 10 years or so ago when sound regulations made it difficult (impossible) to use them.
