Suitable Paint or Varnish

After hanging washing over the bannister for the past 20 years, the rail became badly marked with black stains. Sandpapered the top back to the wood and wonder if anyone knows what sort of varnish I could use which would nearly match the existing one.

Dont know if the colours will really show up well but if you know of a varnish that will coverall, could you please let me know?
