Suitable under coat plaster

I have an internal old wall with no damp issues that I need to do some patch repairs on. The whole wall will be skimmed. The wall consists of bricks laid with lime. Don't want to go down the lime route and I am not sure the exsisting plaster is lime. What can I use as a suitable alternative? What's the exsisting plaster?
