Hi all,

I'm opening the area from our sittingroom to our hall. We own the downstairs flat of a victorian terrace house. The joists in the house run front to back, and sit on a beam in the middle of the house.

In the picture I have tried to explain the layout.

I am going to replace the support under the landing with an Oak Pillar, but am I alright to remove the other stud work? Will the top of the stairs be supported by the joist?

I can post more pics if it helps.

Thanks Ben

I don't know if it helps, but the stud work I have removed was sitting on the floor boards, not on the floor joist. The bit under the landing is sitting on the floor joist, and I am sure that this is supporting the stairs.

Normally stairs are supported at the landing by a trimmer joist and not by a stud wall or any wall running up the side

You need to investigate the first-floor joist layout to confirm how the stairs are supported though
