Is it necessary to remove the worktop to do this?

I've just moved into a new house and realised the oven is gas and not a very good model. I would like to either upgrade it or even better, switch it to electric. I don't want to undo to much of the building work in order to do this though!

The current gas oven has a digital display, so must have some electrical power running to it, though possibly not the right circuit?

Sorry if this is a naive question! Thanks for your help!

If you are talking about a built in oven, then it should be secured into the cupboard housing with screws that are usually visible when you pull down the oven or grill door If you remove these screws then you should be able to carefully pull out the oven & should be able to see the gas & electric supplies at the rear. I say "should", but it is not guaranteed to be done this way.
