Taking scrap to be weighed in.

We normally give out scrap cast iron stuff to fat Dave our local scrappie, he collects from site and it's done and dusted.

However in 2 weeks time we're about to embark on the mother of all houses which is that big their garage block is the size of my house

There must be about 450 linear metres of seamless aluminium guttering to come off and about 20 5.5mtr downpipes.

We think with the cost of scrap at it's peak we have decided to bypass fat Dave and take it to the scrapyard and 'weigh it in'.

Never done this before, do we ring around getting per kilo prices and choose the best place (like we do when buying lead rolls) or is the price the same when we get there? Do we have to pre-book? Do we have to supply proof of where it came from so they know we haven't pinched it?

If you go to a one man band scrappy they will have license to rip you off by giving you a crap price. Call your local branch of EMR metals. They will tell you over the phone the price per ton for that day. It would be worth driving to one if not local because the price they give you compared to the small yard may be as much as 40%. Of course fat dave probably knows all the tricks in the book to fiddle the scales etc to reduce the payout

And what do you think "Fat Dave " will do if he finds you have tried a fast one on him - If I was him I`d tell you to stuff your cast iron in the future and tell all my fat ***** mates to blacklist you - then you`ll have to get a waste carriers licence etc . and send your own employees off with " worthless" iron gutter -

Yes it's all pretty simple really, just call a few to check prices then take it in. With what you have there isn't much you need to do other than chuck it in the van.
With it being old stuff you'll be pretty worry free about its origin in most yards they only tend to be wery of lots of new stuff like rolls of lead, railway cabling and beer barrels.
And with some yards they just take a name and address for the receipt with no checks to verify if it's even a real name if you get my drift
and don't worry about Fat Dave just how do you think he's gotten fat in the first place, converted your cast into pies most likely.
Take your cast in yourself in future too , it's worth it.

anything metal is money,hence why the the boys are driving around in there transits picking/theiving everything anything.

even crud is worth summit like £150-£200 a tonne.

Light Iron, drain covers from the side of the road, someone's gas pipe, its all worth a few ££££.

Local EMR has a 'rogues gallery' in the weighing shed, under NO circumstances are they to purchase metal from those people, and if any turn up then EMR are to contact the Police (By the time the local law get round to looking into it though the metal has probably found its way into the smelting pot anyway....)

Oh, and you cant take anything radioactive, EMR have a detector on the weighbridge....

Ali guttering isn't cheap to buy new, have you considered the fact that it might be worth much more as second hand guttering than scrap?

Find out the scrap value, stick it on ebay for the scrap price and buyer to collect. No problemo.
