I have not heard a single person state that they prefer the new 2010 VOC compliant oil based paints.

I find that I now use far more thinners and Owatrol in the paints than ever before. Further, there have been occasions where I have had to apply an extra coat. I also warn customers that the paint will yellow faster (requiring a recoat early than would have been the case previously). Anecdotally the paint coverage seems inferior, suggesting that more paint is needed to cover the same area.

I appreciate that the paint industry had an obligation to reduce VOCs but wonder if the maths really stack up.

Have the VOCs been reduced sufficiently to compensate for the extra coats and thinners/additives being used?

Is it also possible that whilst overall levels of VOCs might have been reduced some of the ingredients have been replaced with potentially more harmfull ingredients? eg less titanium and more formaldehyde (I am assuming that the latter might be more harmful than the former)
