Hi all,

We want to lay a Victorian style mosaic tiling in our hallway about 3m long. The floorboards are 2cm thick and the tiles will be 1cm thick.

What's the best way of doing this? If I cut the floorboards out and lay 15mm ply say, they will be raised by a good 8mm with the adhesive. Is this just the way it has to be be or is there a way of getting it flush when it joins the floorboards?

Thanks

15mm probably won't cut it, you really need to tile onto 18mm ply.
You might be able to lay ply on battens between the joists, then lay a cement based tile backer board over the lot, then your tiles. Save you a few mm.
