I lifted up a carpet in a house when I was self employed and saw my sister staring up at me from the pages of the Manchester Evening News.

Blimey, that would worry the hell out of me.
I don't recall my sister going anywhere near Manchester.

Lots of people appear in regional papers without being local.

Our local comp was in the Daily Record yesterday.

The oldest newspapers i remember seeing in a house were used to line the walls of Wordsworth's cottage in Grasmere. All the way back to the 1820s. No headlines, as it was the front page of The Times, but the adverts were amusing.
"Doctor Pocklington's CURE-ALL: good for gout, warts, bad breath and skin rash. Rub in twice daily. Can be used to treat worms in dogs, pigs cures a cows cough quick as spit."
