Toilet: Anything between the cistern and the pan

As subject really, do I need to put anything between the toilet cistern and the pan? Is it ok to have porcelain against porcelain?

Hi, I have that, it was more between the two porcelains. Should I put some silicone on the pan for the cistern to 'sit' on, or is it ok just to put cistern on the pan with nothing separating them?

cistern simply sits on the pan no silicone is required just rubber doughnut washer not cheap foam washer.
