Can anyone help me, my toilet cistern continues filling up over the top of the overflow outlet pipe and doesn't cut out filling for about five minutes. The ballcock lifts when it should but the flow doesn't stop for several minutes of pouring through the overflow. How does the raising ballcock stop the waterflow normally? is there something I could fix or will it need a replacement part?

Almost certainly just needs a new washer. You'll need to find out how to turn the water off. Then it takes less than a minute with a couple of spanners - usually.
