we have oil fired underfloor heating system on both floors of the house, all has been well apart from this year when the the towel rails in both upstairs bathrooms will not heat. have tried shutting down flow to other rooms giving the towel rails priority but with no success.

Have you Bled the Towel rails it does not take much air to stop these from working also what is the system pressure? if at Zero it need topping up at the filling loop to 1-00 Bar remember to re-check the pressure whenever you bleed any raidiators etc ;)

Sounds like an air-lock due to sagging pipework

Turn off every radiator/zone in the house apart from One of the offending radiators.

On the opposite side to the TRV there is another dummy valve. Remove the plastic cap from this completely and open the valve fully using an adjustable spanner or similar. [remember how it was set by counting the amount of turns or 1/2 turns it took to fully open it so you can return it to the same setting once retified]

Now run the boiler ensuring you have adaquate pressure in the system. Turn the pump up to it's highest setting, if it's not already

[remember the setting it is at so you can return it to that setting again later once problem is rectified]

Now give the system some time to heat and check for air at the bleed screw, Feel the pipes feeding into the rad for any change in temp.

This should rectify the issue if not report back.

Regards

thanks for the guidance, I'm afraid it proved ineffective on this occasion so it's back to the drawing board ,,,,regards..

Mmm How long did you leave it? Works 9 times out of ten

Only other option is to remove the rads one at a time and flush some water from both pipes one at a time, until the air lock is removed

You up to that?
