Tripping RCD light switch

Hi,

Just had a new RCD switch fitted to our fuse box. Everything is working but if I turn the hall light on or the bathroom light on the RCD trips. The wiring looks fine in the switches and ligths. Can anyone help?

Since day one?

Is the RCD covering all circuits (yukky sparky design who has little idea of requirments), or a split load CU (good for the next few weeks!).

Sounds like either the neutrals or terminated to the incorrect side of the CU, or the lighting circuit shares a neutral with another circuit.




Your best bet is to get the installer back.

You should also have a certificate for this type of work.

Are the hall light and the bathroom light the only lights on ane fuse or are there others?

If there are no others then maybe there is the wrong neutral in the board, otherwise there may be what is known as a "borrowed neutral". Can be a nightmare to find.
The advice above is good - the installer must sort this out.
If he's a registered spark (he should have been to change a consumer unit) There will be a guarantee on his work.

Yes, this has happened from day one. All the lights in the flat are from the same fuse on the CU, but only the hall and bathroom light is affected. As soon as I switch them on, bang the rcd trips.

Does it still trip if you take the bulbs out?

It might be that some numpty has wired the lights between L&E

It doesn't trip the switch once the light bulb has been taken out.

Well that rules out leakage from any of the switched live wiring. You're now looking for trouble on the neutral side. As others have suggested, this could be a case of neutral returns connected to the wrong circuit - or even to earth.
