I feel a bit of an idiot posting this, hence the title.

Bath plug (standard round plug on a chain) seems to fit, but bath slowly drains which is annoying when relaxing with a nice book.

On investigation, the bit the plug fits into, the receptacle, is slightly out of round. There's about a 1mm gap on two sides, and a perfect tightish fit on the other two sides.

How to fix?

Sandpaper the tight sides? Will look a mess & the Mrs won't like it.

If you can't replace the waste altogether it's going to be a lot less risky to modify the plug than the hole (though obviously less convenient in use). You may just be able to get the plug good and hot and force it in there. Wouldn't recommend removing metal from plughole because it's not very thick on a modern waste. Could well have been forced out of round by overtightening but that may have been done for good reason.

see if you can get a (white) rubber plug. They are measured across the hole - not by the waste size. ie. a bath inch and a half waste may be a inch and 3/4 plug. Try The Plumbers Mate from Eastbourne - online shop. Other plug sellers are available ;)
