Trouble with new light fitting wiring.



Downstairs socket. Wire to common in grey sheath is not part of 3 core, is separate wire



UPSTAIRS SOCKET>>>Looking here you should see that there are 3 different cables going to switch, i know this switch is being spurred from an old unit about 5 inches away red red in choc block blue black in choc block
yellow common, black and red separate.

3 core red black earth

4 core red blue yellow earth

Not much help, I have an idea but I can't tell you to try this, try that on here.

Is there a way SAFELY that you could test - do you have a meter? - to find out which is the permanent live?

If so, is it the two reds joined at the switch AND the red (of the R B & Y) at the ceiling OR
is it the red (of the R & B) at the ceiling?

If you cannot do this you will have to find an electrician.

I should be interested in the solution when you find it.
 
its looking like i may have to bite the bullet and get a sparky out i think.
