John, it does not matter what I prefer. It just confuses the hell our of a diy-er. Believe it or not, but the vast majority of consumers, and sadly enough also some installers, think that the trv works the same as a volume knob on the stereo. What is obvious and child’s play for you, will be complete sorcery to a lot of people. I had a similar problem with a chap the other day who simply could not understand that the flow pipe and the dhw pipe were not related. They were both hot so if he had heating, he should have hot water. Surely I did not understand the problem if I could not see that.
The op is not very experienced with heating, judging by his posts, so will need step by step guidance if he is going to accomplish any improvement at all.
