I'm looking to add TRV's to all my radiators, but have been told it is usual to leave one radiator without one. Is this correct ? CH system is conventional, Potterton boiler with expansion tank in attic , cylinder in airing cupboard...

regards
Simon

Yes.

Generally put no TRV in the slowest-heating room, and put the room stat in that room too. The idea being that by the time that room has warmed up, the rest of the house will be warm too. If this room has two rads, you can put a TRV on the one nearest the room stat.

If the room stat is not in the slowest-heating room, turn down the lockshields until it is. It is best not to have other sources of heat in this room (like cookers or a big sunny window) because once this room is warm, the heating will go off.

If you haven't got a room stat already... get one!

john is right, his explaination covers the most efficient way to control the temperature in your house. There is another reason (in fact the main reason as i understand) not to have a trv on each radiator, that is that if the whole house gets hot they will turn all the radiators off and the CH pump will be pumping away with the water going nowhere etc -which isnt good.
