two way dimmer switch

bought a two way dimmer switch in wich the terminals are different from my previous switch and when i turn on my light only one comes on,when i press the switch it goes off and the other one comes on but the whole system WONT switch off

Do you have a two way lighting circuit in the room? If not, it sounds like you need to remove the wire from L2 and put it in with the other wire into L1.

Describe what was on the back of your old switch, how many wires are at each switch position, and what the old switch used to behave like, and we can start to help - otherwise it couldbe almost anything..

Have you got a two gang switch?

It sounds like you have put the switchwires of both lights onto the L1 and L2 of the same switch, so in one switch position, Light A is on and when you push the switch again, it changes over to Light B.

As Mike says we need more info, and you may well need a Multimeter to check which conductor does what.
