Hi Guys,
Just bought a new house (detached with double garage adjoining) and seems in good shape, only the soffit and fascias let it down. Currently soft wood with probably one coat of paint in 25 years!
I'm a pretty good diyer but the house has three gable ends, two either end (one above double garage with pitched roof) and also a gable on the front. I was thinking of scafolding or tower so I was safe and comfortable to do a good job.

I've had one quote of £3500 (one person 2 days) which I must admit knocked me over a bit! He said its daft to use scafolding for a job like this and he would do it all of a ladder.

Just wondering if people had any experience of doing it DIY, was it worth it? pitfalls? or should I just get a few more quotes and let a pro do it.

Cheers Zeb

What about a boom arm cherry picker?
Have some work to do on my own gables and a cherry picker for the day will cost about a hundred quid. Plus its safe.
But I've got the space to maneuver it which helps obviously.

He sounds like a gypo to me. Get scaffolding and do it yourself, save money and do a much better job than some cowboy on a ladder.

Wouldn't use a ladder myself.
But seen two guys complete the facia and guttering on a large two storey inside two days.
All off ladders. About six ladders in fact.
Four foot gap between them and one guy could step across at high level.
Who needs scaffolding when you got guys like that?
Done a real top job too!
So not necessarily cowboys if they use ladders.

Two to three experienced guys on a team is an entirely different scenario to working on your own.

Ladder scaffolding?

You'd need ba**s to get up on some of that, though I've been up on worse.
