boiler works when manually switched on, heating comes on for about 1 hour then just stops working, have to wait a few hours before boiler will work again.

Yeah...right...a combi never provides hot water does it!! Sheezz!!
The timer delay can go faulty on these, if so id be looking down the PCB area.
I thought you could get around the delay by switching off at the mains.
If you try this, then it would prove/disprove Harrogate's idea.
On reflection, I think I was a bit harsh on Bamber earlier (sorry).
