Vectra 2001 problems

For the last couple of weeks the engine has been slow to fire when cold,the engine light came on last week and tonight I pulled away from the lights and a cloud of white smoke came out..although ok after that,car appears to be running fine.............any suggestions??
Forget to mention its a vectra 2001 1600 ls petrol engine

engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor would be the first thing to change. Should get change out of £20 and 5 minute job to swap
