hi the car gti t mk4 golf when stopped warm at tick over is cutting out then wont start for 20 min then starts and runs fine until next time ,today while sitting at lights the car ticking over fine i pressed for the air con to come on and the car instantly died and the same problem arose where it wouldnot start and had to be left for around 20 min and then started ,,does anyone know what this is ,,mythought is there is a noise from the fuel pump when it starts and the pump may be on its way out thanks john.

The noise is a good thing, just check that it is still there when it wont start?

Also check for a spark at the spark plugs, just after it has stopped

And get the fault codes read, it will point you in the right direction.

I think the coolant temperature sensor (4 wire type over the bell housing) give a bit of trouble, though the engine should start up again. Dirty IAC (idle air control) valve needs a clean?

This is a bit older than your one

are you saying that when the car gets hot and it either cuts out or you stop the engine that it wont start for 20 minutes?
If so id definatly start by changing either the crankshaft sensor or the coolant temperature sensor
