vw Golf Overheating

i have a vw golf diesel
it seems to overheat when i drive over 60mph
ie motorway driving
The water and oil are ok and the fan seems to cut in ok
Driving round town it seems to be ok
any ideas please ?

You don't say how old it is but if its done a lot of miles its likely that the radiator needs replacing.

Might be worth checking for heat from the heater in the car when the engine overheats? And leave the top off the coolant tank for one or two days, see if that helps? Is the car down on power at all?

Have you a temp gauge or a light?

I would have thought it would have overheated in normal driving if that had been the case - unless its not opening fully.

The engine power during fast driving is about three times driving slowly round town.

So I would suggest either sludged up or the thermostat not opening properly.

Presumably removing the stat and putting it into a cup of boiling water is still a suitable test?

Alas the OP seems to have vanished so I guess we'll never know.......
The boiling pan method for 'stat testing still applies, but some come complete with their own housing so they can be quite large!
