We are trying to replace some new wall lights after decorating. Straightforward wiring matched red live to brown live, neutral to neutral and earth to earth. However the lights won't work! checked everything we can think of, even put old lights back up and they don't work now either.

Using a circuit tester the power is there and reaching the bulb socket but still no joy. Did notice however that the tester is lighting when touching the neutral wire..could this be the problem or has anyone any ideas before i phone the electrician. Thanks.

Are other lights working that are on that circuit, ie have you blown the fuse or tripped the breaker, might be the obvious but have you checked it?.If its not that the xperts will give you ideas

no i've checked fuse box and all other lights etc. working. Thanks anyway

Single probe neon testers cannot be relied upon. The only way to test is with a multi-meter or dual probe tester. If you don’t own one you should call an electrian.

try giving all the wire ends a good tug with a pair of pliers it may be that the wire has broken inside the insulation
