Hi

Hope someone can offer some advice before I call out a professional to look at this for me. Basically we notice when the washing machine empties we get a really terrible smell and the smaller of the dual sink fills up with grey water (not particularly filthy, just looks like used washing water).

I've been underneath the sink this evening and I've taken apart the plastic piping and can't see any blockages within there so am wondering if it's further down the line and what to do next.

I've attached a simple sketch of what the pipework looks like:

As you can see the washing machine (blue W) comes into the same drain as the smaller side of the dual sink. This then meets the regular drain of the main sink and everything exits down the same plastic pipe (looks about 4 inches in diameter). The problem of backing up occurss where the red circle is.

Thanks.

hi lachesis

it sounds like all you need to do is buy a plunger as i have the same set up and this happens to me occasionally, try this before calling someone out!!

What looks like is happening is with the washing machine pumping the water out of the machine, it is pushing she water out of the trap so this is why you are getting smells.

As for the water backfilling you must have a slight blockage somewhere after the trap
