Washing machine smell

My wife had the bright idea after doing some painting of putting all the dirty rags and cloths we had been using into our washing machine
The problem was that they had been covered in paint ,white spirit etc
I now have a washing machine which now smells of paint type substances
Has anybody any idea how I can rid my machine of the smell
I have even have tried putting the washing machine on with a empty load with washing powder but the smell still lingers
I tried last night putting a normal wash on but the clothes now smell of paint

Please Help
