We need to pay £10bn to clean up their mess

Now JohnD and Noseall are being a bit silly. They both have ignored that the privatization has failed which i clearly said.

However they are still blaming Tory's after 14 years of labour government when equally it was obvious it had failed. They did nothing to address this through.



Now lets blame Thatcher again shal we? While we are at it I did ask for their solution and well shock horror nothing being proposed. Bit pathetic really.

Conservatives privatised it
And the last 14 years has seen a terrible period for water, notably sewage.

I agree that the failures must’ve been building during Blair years and they didn’t reverse it….new Labour have been complicit in the ever increasing private sector taking public utilities and services

Overall though this is Conservative ideology that has failed.

I understand that point, it has merit, but It’s very hard to reverse privatisation….mostly because it’s chuffing expensive to do it.
 
I've been in a few. They use aluminium sulphate etc as a coagulator, I dunno what else. Mostly though the treament involves filtering/ settlement, and oxygenation, so I imagine a big resource they don't have is space for often-redundant filter beds. They have centrifuge gear which must be expensive. Foreign makes mostly, that sort of stuff, it annoys me.
Much of the solids get spread on fields as sludge or from dried out cakes.. In Victorian times human poo was called "pure" when it got to be used as fertilizer. It was better than the horses' stuff, more nitrogen...

Well to be fair, they (Labour) spent more on regulation, and the EA used to sample sewage works, far more rivers than they do now; they campaigned to farms to control their run off, and the water quality in our rivers was better as a result of all of this.

Much of this was driven by EU regs, but also the political will in the UK.

Since the Tories got in, Environmental Protection in the EA has been cut by about 80%, and so the water companies self monitor, and send results to the EA. River sampling has been cut to the bone, and the way in which bathing water is tested for isn't as good as it was, so when you see pass rates, they should be taken with a pinch of salt. Its probably worse than is being reported.
