i'm just about to start building a conservatory and intend taking the mains electricity for it off an existing socket in my house extending a ring..For a number of reasons the most sensible way of running the cables in the conservatory would be in the floor base whilst i'm building it as this will avoid nightmare routing above ground..#

what to the regs say about this ..what do I need to bury the cable in and how deep does it need to be??

In earthed steel conduit. However, this is not a job for the ameteur electrician. It takes skill to fit it right and earth it properly, and special tools are required to make off the ends. Using steel conduit, you can bury the conduit just below the surface if i remember correctly.

If you have enough depth in the base (ie more than 50mm) you can run the cable under the screed. The cable should be protected though - run in some conduit or 32mm waste pipe works well.
