what is heat Exchanger and what does it do?

Hi, I am 18 and want to get into the heating industry slowly by learning some basics from some very experienced guys here.

Could someone please explain me the following? if might make a good lessons for me.

1> What is a heat exchanger ?
2> Why is it needed ?
3> How is it operated ?
4> Number of heat exchanges in a boiler and their different types ?
5> What kind of issues can arise in heat exchanger and can it be repaired ?

dude, i am already studying something related to this but curious on how it works in boilers. I read books but no meaning to me, so i thought practicle experience sometime explains it more and quick.
