It is otherwise known as building sand, the bag should be labelled as soft sand or building sand. As the name suggests it feels soft and loamy. Sharp sand is also known as concreting sand and is gritty to the touch.

Sometimes called pit sand. Usually comes in a colour - red or yellow. Sharp sand is gritty. Soft sand has no grit at all. Technically, sharp sand can be up to 5mm in size - or at least can pass a 5mm sieve.

Thanks for the replies. I actually bought some Hanson building sand fromWickes and it is very gritty with large grains throughout. This is the source of the confusion.
