I want to repaint my white kitchen ceiling, but am not sure what kind of paint is on it at the moment. It looks like emulsion with a soft sheen to it. Don't know if it's just old vinyl or silk that has lost it's shine over time, or something else.

Is there a white paint that I can cover it with that won't give me any problems and is suitable for kitchens (grease and steam) ? DOn't want to put a kitchen matt and find it starts peeling.

I've sugar soaped the whole ceiling and only want 2 coats max. Ideally I'd rather not put a shiny new coat on top, but just a mild sheen. Also don't want something that is only available in 20l pots. It's a medium sized ceiling.

Any ideas anyone?

Have you tried egg shell, its oil based emulsion, should give a soft sheen to the paint. tester pots! see if you like the finish. make sure you use appropriate rollers though.

Eggshell is a finish. it can be either oil based or emulsion, (water based) It wont be both. An oil based product might be better as its going over a shiny surface. Once its on it will kill and possible stains and can be coated over with any other type of emulsion or finish.
