I am building a roof for my porch. It will be gable fronted, and I want the roof to over hang by 50cm ish. What Pale Hardwood is readily available that I could use for the wall plates, ridge, and the rafters that will be visible?

Just after a bit of advice so that I don't sound clueless when I ring the builders merchant next week.

is the join in the middle large enough to fit either a nail or long thin screw through? If so you could do it that way.

Edit... sorry i posted this as an answer to a stable door question?? gone into the ether i suppose...

is that the right answer to a different question

Unlikely to stay light coloured for long externally will go silver grey is a year or so. The big problem is that the majority of light coloured hardwoods are perishable. Maybe some Iroka as that can be quite yellow but unless you sort it yourself you may end up with something much darker.
