What type of support for cupboard top

I have an in built cupboard which I'm putting shelves in and it will also need a top.

The walls were re-skimmed and now cover up to the wood on the right hand side and back of the cupboard so the top does not have a lip to rest on (front and left side are fine). What type of wood would give the top adequate support, it will probably be 18mm MDF as we have some spare in the garage. Nothing else is planned to go on the top for the moment but in the future I guess it could be used to store stuff.

Previously there was 20mm scotia that the top was nailed to but I wasn't sure if would be strong enough to support it now.

Fix a 2 x 1in planed softwood cleat to the back and the side to support the top - glued and screwed to the existing structure for preference

Thanks is there anything a bit more decorative that could be used as the cupboard will be open?

You could fit the support above the top where it won't be seen.
