I bought an Austin A55 van in 1965 when I was in the Royal Navy.

Bolted some old seats from a mates Morris 1000 into the back and used it to ferry the lads from Rosyth to York and Leeds every weekend for a year.
Was a bit shakey in the back and cold in winter but they got home at weekends for the cost of the petrol shared between them. Carried four in the back and one passenger in front, so it only cost 1/5th of the petreol each.

A Ford Special in the early 60s....Based on the Ford E93A engine and chassis.

Looked like an E type... :D

Drove like a Ford E93A... :(

Boiled like a Swann kettle...

1937 Lancia Aprilia. Cost £40. Had to rebuild the engine and then took it through France, Switzerland and Italy and Germany on holiday.

Fantastic car, years ahead of its time. Independent suspension on all wheels, 12 inch hydraulic drum brakes on all wheels, 1300 cc V4 engine with overhead camshaft. I raised the compression ratio by fitting different pistons and fitted twin carbs. It cruised down the Autobahn at 90!

The best thing was the road holding; it went round corners as if it was on rails. Saw of many Minis, including Coopers.

Mk3 escort, base model, really it had nothing at all! it was a pile of sh*te it really was. Pretty easy to work on though, which sadly was fairly essential!

Once developed a great problem whereby I used 15 litres of oil getting down the M6, fantastic car, blew the be jeez out of the engine eventually.

It's a wonder they never took off in the rallying circuit then?
Don't forget it was a 1937 car. Production stopped in 1949, long before rallying was popular. In any case Lancia was very succesful rallying in the 70's and 80's with the Fulvia. I had a Zagato Sport 1.3 litre engine, 120mph top speed.
