That look like a 25mm single gang galvanised steel back box with some kind of adapter plate.

On the other hand it could be a non standard american J box. Can you give dimensions?

It may be more useful to say what you want to do.

Over here it's 'normal' to fit a batten between the two uprights in the frame, and screw the box to it (with screws through the back into the batten).

You'd be wanting a 'flush box', examples here.
 
Is the OP is asking about the metal bracket holding the metal box to the wooden stud, rather than the US switch plate adapter on the front? In which case surely you would just screw through the side of the box to mount it?
 
A fillet of wood would be just as good.

Better, actually - long screws through the box and the fillet into the stud would, by the looks of it, give a more solid result.
