On the original subject of the thread (I'm getting bad at keeping up here nowadays! ), I think it is possible to be a woman and a girl simultaneously. I use the two words interchangeably depending on context. You can be a "young single woman" and a "fun-loving girl". In reality, they are just words, and like all words were invented by mankind to describe concepts. There is no technical specification defining the point at which one becomes a woman!

However, I wouldn't refer to any girl under the age of 18 as a "woman". I learned recently that your bones are not fully fused until 25. 25 years old. So technically, you're still an adolescent at 24! Adolescent, probably the best word to use: the grey area between childhood and adulthood.

Same applies to men and boys, but I think men use the term "the boys" less frequently when referring to their peer group, as in "I'm going out with the boys".

A line from a film which has always stuck in my mind is "any fool with a d*ck can be a father, but it takes a man to raise a child"... so perhaps such logic could be used to determine the threshold between childhood and adulthood? Bit extreme though!

"Madam" is not used very often in everyday circumstances, and "ma'am" generally seems to be used with the Queen.

thats my point...they call their mother mam...i never had kids and sometimes forget that if i did, they would be in their 20s....so it makes me feel old.....but actually its intended to be polite

generally no...love, hon, babe, lil bit, affectionate terms in general...no.

but mam and miss have a 'age related' invisible line between them...it seems. i just think about things too much....
the one exception....would be the word/term 'missy'-i have friends now who call me that just to get my dander up.....which maybe on second thought, i shouldn't have put that on the internet

yep...that's how they mean it too. usually as a result when i 'go too far' and step on feelings...i do that a lot...unintentionally...but it is their way of letting me know and still keepin it friendly. i find it frustrating...because i do say so many unintentional 'hurting' remarks...you would think i would learn by now
