Shutpa
..........life was great in primary 6! Thirty two boys and we all got on like a house on fire. And then in 1946 my dad decided to buy a new house and I had to move school. From the very beginning, I hated it. My new school was run by bullies and as the newcomer, I was the daily target. Punches, kicks and verbals were the order of the day. And it didn't help when on my very first day the teacher told me to sit beside a boy who turned out to be the schools 'best fighter' and who got great pleasure in punching me in the ribs. My misery did not last long however.
One lunchtime, I was standing speaking to some classmates, when a shout, "Shutpa, watch out", alerted me to the fact that one of the school bullies was bearing down on me obviously intent on doing me serious harm. Terrified, just as he reached me and in order to protect myself, I bent down to minimise the contact. Imagine my surprise when my assailant flew through the air and landed flat out, about 8 feet away. I have never forgotten the reaction of my peers and from that moment on, I was king of the castle. They thought I meant it! And the 'best fighter' who sat next to me in class said, that same afternoon, that he wasn't the best fighter, I was! Little did he, or any of the rest of them know that I had no idea then and still have no idea, as to why that bully flew through the air when I bent down to protect myself.
What about you? Do you have any memorable stories from schooldays?
