Was just wondering what is the correct type of drill bit to use to make a hole for the spindle of new door handles? The doors are solid wood.

go for 15 to 18mm flat bit no need to make it to tight
you can use a half inch bit but leaves no room for error
and when you fit the handles move the handle up and down and sideways on the spindle and centralise on the movement
in other words if the handle moves say 12mm top to bottom the raise it 6mm ;)

Thanks. I forgot to say I am using surface mounted locks with knobs to replace old ones that are a different size - will this make a difference?

nope same applies but you only need to centralise the handle on the shaft if it screws to the door ;)
