We laid some Wickes parquet flooring and ( although it was pre finished ) gave it a light sand a further coat of varnish to be on the safe side. Within a few months it was clear that it was wearing really badly with quite a lot of bare wood showing through in places and a lot of scratches, even though it has had no more than usual family use. Wickes have referred us to the manufacturers who have said that this type of floor might need to be resanded and revarnished every 3 - 6 months. Wickes say that they have had no other complaints and so there cannot be a problem. I just wondered if anyone else had had similar problems with this product?

Wrong, wrong wrong! Pre-finished = pre-finished. There goes your warrantee! Always, always, always follow manufacturer instructions to the letter, or shop at a spcialised wooden flooring company that gives out better (free) advice on all kinds of floors, finishes etc.

Well no, actually, the instructions say it does not need any further varnishing but that, if it is in an area where there might be a lot of water, an extra coat of varnish can be applied and gives instructions on how to do this (which we followed). The floor is in a kitchen/ dining area ; we tried to get advice from Wickes staff as to whether this constituted an area where we should be applying the extra varnish but no- one seemed to know so we thought it prudent to err on the side of caution. ( A course which the tradesman who laid the floor agreed with). In fact the worst of the wear is in the dining area not the kitchen.

cowlie, first of all let my apologize for my 'outburst', wasn't really directed to you and I'm sure you followed the instructions to the letter.
My pet-hate, peeve etc is why wickes and other DIY-sheds sell PRE-finished flooring that are in fact semi-finished. Or why they don't supply proper maintenance leaflets with the flooring they sell. Normally proper maintenance, with the correct products, prevents having to re-varnish etc in most cases.
Reason for my pet-hate: the DIY-sheds give wooden flooring a 'bad' name, cause a) not providing proper information on where and why to use which flooring-type, B) not knowing how to install which kind of flooring properly where etc and C) not providing proper maintenance instructions or after care.
(I won't mention prices and "you get what you pay for" in regards with quality).

Try to find a proper maintenance product to care for the varnish you used and try this out in a little spot, might give your floor back its lustre before you start resanding and re-varnishing again.
