I've just moved into my flat and the lovely crittle windows (uff!) dont have any lock on them, but do have a hole. I'd like to get something a bit more sophisticated than just a basic padlock (as that'd just look a bit too cheap)

can you suggest something as a google search isnt being helpful (im probably using the wrong words)

Thanks in advance

That looks like first floor at least, why do they need locking unless easily accessible? Padlocks won't be good should the worst happen and you need to escape via the windows in a fire either.

Are you buying or renting the flat, since this will determine how much you can actually do to it.

Tend to agree with freddy on this, but if you are insistent and cannot replace the windows for some reason or another, an alternative would be to install secondary glazing which could be locked as well as supply additional sound/heat insulation.

hi there.
i have just bough the flat and hope to get double glazing next year (it's ex-local and freeholders are quite rubbish at allowing owners to replace windows)

and yep, I am 2nd floor, but there is a communal stair well within 2foot and also have an airvent (which would appear to be easy to open). so would like the ability of having a bit of security.

you forgot to say what your windows are made of.

there are numerous types of neat window lock available to suit every variety of window.

Hi there,
they are just metal crittle windows.. and i am really only looking for something similar to a padlock but just a bit more classy.
It's only a temporary measure for a year until double glazing goes in.

you could probably use some kind of casement stay lock, though the ones I use have a base that is screwed to a wooden frame, and your look like painted steel. It is more work to drill and tap into steel.

You could even put a nut and both through the hole.

the clip looks like it might be already threaded for a bolt.

If it's just temp what about getting a pack of cable ties? Almost invisible if you trim the end off.
They are cheap enough to waste a few if you need to open the window but keep something to cut them near the window in case of fire!
