I am currently in the process of fitting a full Richard Burbidge Stair Balustrade in white oak as per:

http://www.richardburbidge.co.uk/main.asp?page=401

When I spoke to Richard Burbidge they recommended a glue called "CASCAMITE / EXTRAMITE" which is based on "UREA FORMALDEHYDE".

I think this is the stuff I need:

My question is:

- Is this the best stuff to use?
- Is it easy to use?
- Is there anything ready made up that I dont need to mix ? (the above seems to be a power that I mix water with).

Thanks in advance

Mark

i tend to use good ol pva,but over the last few years seem to be using polyurethane glue more.

There is no reason you should not use animal glue. It is used hot, but it sticks well enough that ships masts used to be made with it, and it's fixable later.

mark - Cascamite is a brilliant glue but (not a negative but) it's been around for decades (I first used it in the mid-Sixties for canoe building, and I've still got the tin in the garage & it still works). Very strong, dries transparant, quick drying, water-proof, etc. If Burbidge's recommend it, then use it ... guarantees, lack of staining, etc. Word of warning - clear excess/spillages straight away 'cos it's impossible to remove otherwise. There are modern glues which perform as well as Cascamite but be watchful of their staining properties on oak.

Well I got myself a tub and all I can say is WOW! - Its fantastic for hardwood and you can just mix up exactly what you want. Like you say its just a poweder so it should keep for ages (not a bad price either).
