Hi,

I have done a search on here and cannot find a definitive answer.

My old back door is now an internal door due to an extension the previous owner had built. There is a door with a window adjoining it, span approx 1.3m. I would like to replace this with internal French doors so there will be no centre support in the middle of the internal wooden lintel.

Is this acceptable or should I replace with a concrete lintel or is it possible to reinforce the wooden lintel so that it will not sag.

Many thanks

Neil

Difficult to comment without seeing it as we would need to know the dimensions of the wooden lintel and the load it is carrying.

It's not entirely clear what the situation is from your post but, if the new opening is going to be wider than the existing opening - logically it follows that a new lintel will be required...........

It may be possible to 'cradle' the existing lintel with a piece of angle iron-or two, complete with pre drilled holes for bolting through if necessary.

What is the size and condition of the existing lintel?

Hard to tell without seeing a picture but I highly doubt that a door or window frame will be loadbearing.
Is there anything between the door frame and window frame such as a masonry, timer or steel pillar or is it just the door frame and window frame butted up to each other?
