Yesterday, after the washing machine had been on for a while I noticed that the cycle wasn't moving on. I put my hand on the door and it felt boiling hot and when I opened the door loads of steam came out. I then moved on the cycle to drain the drum, which it did. I moved the cycle on to spin and nothing happened so I took out the clothes and left the machine to cool down.
Today I tried to get the machine to spin again and the drum wasn't moving at all.
So, originally I thought the problem might be the thermistor because of the overheating and the cycle not moving, but then I thought brushes because it's not spinning. Surely they can't both go at the same time? The machine does seem to be filling and draining okay.
Is the problem, therefore more likely to be something like a PCB fault?
Can anyone help with this? I know it's an ancient machine, it's an oldie but a goodie.
Thanks.

Yeah, tried that - it didn't spin, but did make noises like it would be pumping out water.

Checked thermistor and brushes today - both fine. Nothing seemed to be loose anywhere and no obvious signs of blown components or damage.
Where do I look next?

Today I put it back together again and tested it. It managed to do a short wash - filled, turned the drum, emptied - all okay, but stopped at the spin. I stopped the machine and set it to a different spin, again nothing. Now it won't do anything again apart from drain. Whatever I set it to now all it will do is constantly drain or do nothing at all.
Anyone?

This machine has got to be at least 15 years old. It has an old "AKO" timer (obsolete) & separate pcb in the base (also obsolete). If you post the PNC number I can double check but perhaps it is time to put the old dog down :(

I think you are right zipper. The machine is old and I suppose it needs replaced now - any repair is certainly beyond me and I can't see it being worth spending money on getting it repaired/condemned by an engineer.

Thanks for your advice and also to captaincaveman for his help.
