Zanussi ZT 6905 Dishwasher. Salt light on all the time

I have bought a 2nd hand kitchen and it has a ZT 6905 that worked 1 year ago when we bought it.
Now when installing it, I get power but the red salt light is on all the time.

Can this cause the Dishwasher not to start?

Never had a dishwasher before, but I can see a container in the button that is full of water. The small booklet says its for salt.

Where do I go from here?

I would try filling the container in the bottom with dishwasher salt (bought in plastic bags from the supermarket)and see if the light goes out.

Will probably run without the salt but may not wash very well.
