Dishwasher making a humming noise - won't work!!

Hi,
our dishwasher has stopped working. It makes a loud humming noise as it is supposed to start to wash....but does nothing. Any ideas please?

Most dishwashers have an anti flood device which when operated will only allow the drain pump to run. No more water will be taken in. The device is usually a polystyrene float in the base (under the wash tub where all the components are) water may have leaked to causr this. Unplug the appliance and check for water in the base. Dry it with towels and hairdryer. Run the appliance again to look for the leak.

I had a tumble dryer that didn't start. It hummed too. The problem there was the motor start capacitor. Many dishwashers have motor capacitors
