Hi,

I've moved into a 1970's house and have just removed a stone wall fire place that had a gas fire in front of it. There is a chimney breast present, giving a hole size of 400mm wide, 310mm deep 680mm tall. What would you do ?

I would like to have a modern landscape glass fronted gas fire but as the hole is only 400mm wide, I assume I would have to build inwards. Also, would this mean the current chimney goes unused?

Any suggestions would be most welcome,

thanks!

Would depend on the space the gas fire needs, which you won't know until you purchase. You will need a gas flue up the chimney.

So, I've exposed the lintel. What does this tell me exactly ?

Should i be able to open the fireplace up ? The chimney is still central to the old opening, won't this collapse if I remove brickwork from the right hand side? Any help would be much appreciated !
