UK economy update

So your saying that if you live in the sticks, you can order all you like over the internet, but there will be no one willing to deliver it?

They can deliver it to hubs, that you can collect from, or you can pay the extra to have it delivered to your house in the arse end of nowhere.

The royal mail is a huge subsidised organisation existing just so a small number of hard to reach houses can get cheap mail, that need is less and less, and soon nearly everyone will have internet access.

No, I don't see the need for such a huge organisation to exist purely so a small number of people can recieve their internet goods, which is all it will be needed for one day soon.

Households with Internet access

We don't need the royal mail to deliver parcels, and that's all it will be for one day.

Have a gander at the Royal Mail site, under media have a butchers at 22 July report. This report is a perfect example as to why this country is in it. Nobody is making, buying or selling, so all of the transport sector is suffering. The strength of the pound is making exports impossible. This is our gov, remember this bunch at election, all the tripe about how things are improving and exports up. Not according to the ONS. Not saying vote Lab either, they had their chance, Thatcher saw them off.
Reading Private Eye on a fairly regular basis open's one's eyes to the derisory self interest that most things are run by. There's a snippet of an article ine this weeks edition regarding the sale of the royal mail.

I wondered when you would arrive on the scene. Muslim are you ?

Complete tosh.
You can't force people to use computers and never will.

One day 95%+ of people will have internet access (83% already do), with smartphones becoming cheaper and cheaper 95% is not an unrealistic target to hit.

The other 5% (and it may well be less than 5%) will be forced to pay for the privilage of a letter if they do not live in areas where it is commercially viable to send them a letter for the cost of a stamp.

Btw ....its the person sending the letter who pays.

Plenty of companies already charge you extra on your bill to send you a letter, so no they do not pay to send you a letter, you pay them to send you a letter.

The only reason we need the royal mail, is currently lots of people live on uneconomic routes, and lots of them are old people who don't have the internet.

One day most of them will be dead and replaced by people who very predomonantly have the internet.

You must be having a laugh if you think in that situation we would be justified in keeping multi million pound "subsidies" so that a few people living in backwaters can get mail for 50p.

You still don't get it.
You can't send someone a council tax bill if they don't have a computer.
Can only be by paper hand delivered.
So your dream of every one having computers is tosh.

nobody likes to miss or be left out. Don't have the net ? miss out

Hurr durr, already addressed that point.

If people want a paper council tax paper bill, the cost of postage will be added to their bill.

Already happens with plenty of commercial services.

Or are you seriously thinking when 95%,98% or 99% of the population has internet access we will keep the royal mail subsidised to the tune of hundreds of millions just so that <1% can get paper bills for a flat cost of a stamp.

What an absurd idea

Can only be by paper hand delivered.

Says you.

I keep hearing you talk about subsidies. What are they and how much ? . If you're not in the game you can't play, durr

A postage stamp is a lot cheaper than a crappy computer.
