My kitchen has a hardwood worktop and I would like to paint it. Any tips, e.g type of paint that would work, should I varnish over the paint?

It wont last and paint is an un-hygenic surface on which to prepare food...you may also have a job getting the paint to adhere to it given all the stuff thats probably soaked into it....or the wood being hardwood may be oily and cause the paint to discolour and/or blister.
