Ive got a dimmer with L1 & L2 teminals but also an arrow with a wavy line through it could someone tell me what this symbol is.Thanx

Hi

The symbol you are talking about is the output from the dimmer to the light fitting, i.e the switches/dimmed output
 
sorry but i disagree, the wavy line like this ~ indicates a.c. (alternating current) it also maeans the the dimmer is NOT for use on d.c. (direct current)

yes ~ does mean a.c, but since the arrow is through it, and identifiying a terminal, wot does it mean?

:?: How do I wire a dimmer switch in an ordinary three-core cable leading from a 13amp plugtop to a spotlight over the bed? - i.e I'm not replacing a light switch in the house wiring.
 
you need to break the brown wire, so you have two browns, one in each side of the switch (doesnt matter which way round)
