Using an MCB to isolate the consumer unit

Did sort of ask this in another post about moving the consumer unit further from the meter (4 metres), but got a mixed response.

Anyone else have ideas why i shouldnt use an 80A dp mcb to isolate by consumer unit, rather than using a switch and a fuse.

If double pole, i see no reason why not.

Thanks for reply, yup double pole 80A mcb type C (part no S292C80A), made by ABB, cost around £45.

Sounds like the way to go.

It would be great if 100a double pole mcb's were fitted in consumer units as standard, in place of the main switch, as it could save the hassle of the 100a mains supply fuse blowing, and having to call the board out etc to fix it.

You're free to do that if you want.

the mcb will trip first on a dead short but then the downstream mcbs will almost certainly deal with that anyway

and i think an overload stands a fair chance of taking out the service fuse first
